Object history: This is from a collection of drawings by Georg Forster purchased by Joseph Banks in August 1776 for 400 guineas.(Medway, 1976, p. 49; Dawson, 1958, p. 339). Inscriptions: Based on Lysaght 1959, p. 281 'Statenland, Jany. 3rd. 1775" – added by Johann Reinhold Forster "S.N.XIII: 259. Lath. 40. n. 19." – added by unknown hand "Ge. Forster" – added by Jonas Dryander. Notes: This is one of the water-colour drawings made by Georg Forster during James Cook's second voyage to the Pacific in 1772-1775. The watercolour is listed by Sharpe 1906, p. 180 and by Lysaght 1959 p. 281 as Plate 34. This is the number written on the right-hand side of the watercolour. John Latham based his description of the "Statenland eagle" on notes provided by Georg Forster's father Johann Reinhold Forster.(Latham, 1781, pp. 40-41).
