Stems are erect, slender, hollow and branched. Leaves are trifoliate; leaflets are slightly hairy on both surfaces, oval and serrated near the tip. Flowerheads are ovoid to conical, 1.5-2 cm wide and consist of many cream pea-like flowers. Pods contain 1-2 seeds. Flowers in spring and summer. A native of the eastern Mediterranean region, it is mostly sown as an annual hay and silage crop (often under irrigation) and occasionally naturalised. Grows best on fertile, medium to heavy textured soils of mildly acidic to neutral pH and where soil exchangeable aluminium is low. Produces moderate amounts of high quality forage and has low bloat risk. Better suited to hay or silage rather than grazing as it has high growing points. Popularity has decreased since Persian Clover became available. Can be sown alone or with other annual legumes, such as Arrowleaf Clover, Persian Clover or Balansa Clover.
