It is native to Rondônia, Paraná, Espirito Santo, Acre (Brazil), Distrito Federal, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Pará, Minas Gerais, Pantanal, Paraíba, Maranhao, Bahia, Cerrado, Ceará, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Rio Grande do Sul, Caatinga, Amazônia, Amazônia, Santa Catarina, Mata Atlântica, Pampa, Goiás, Piauí, Roraima, and São Paulo. It is a photoautotroph.
