Bovingdon and Gadesprings - Field Trip - 19/05/14Roger, Steve and I made a trip to Bovingdon for some late Spring and early Summer species and boy were we in for a treat! We first trapped this site last year on the 11th of June (Trip report HERE)This time though we were simply overwhelmed with species coming in faster than one could jot down.Interestingly we caught most species that we caught last year but as a comparison, we are about 6 weeks ahead of last year (because of the cold Winter of 2012/13)Of course last year was abnormal so we could not go on last years records too much, some of the species that we did get were typically 2 weeks earlier than the books state. The evening was perfect, with a mild muggy feel about it and still 20 degrees at 8pm, the cloud was still with us and the moon stayed at bay (at least until we packed up)The threat of rain seemed to have subsided and the breeze had dropped so we were very lucky indeed. We did not get our target species Light Feathered Rustic, but it needn't have mattered as it was a long shot anyway and there was plenty of interest coming to all four traps as we worked them throughout the night.Highlights included an Alder Moth, Buttoned Snout, Seraphim, Clay Triple-lines, Grass Rivulet and Coronet. The smaller moths were also in abundance, particularly around the twin Actinic trap and several were taken away to examine in natural light.Highlights of the micros included Bucculatrix nigricomella, Mompha lacteella, Mompha raschkiella, Strophedra weirana and Platyptilia gonodactyla, 3 of those new to me.We also managed to get an unusual looking Treble Lines of the form obscura. It really was so nice to see good numbers of the common species as well with 30+ Clouded Silver, 40+ of Red Twin-spot Carpet and Mottled/Common Pug both numbering easily in excess of 25 specimens each.Exhausted as we had finished around 1am at this site, then onto Gadesprings to empty the two traps there, where we found another 3 Alder Moths, Figure of Eighty and Light Brocade amongst a reasonable amount of species.Home at 3am, up at 6am and I felt like I had a hangover this morning, all good fun!Numbers below are as close as I could record! New CameraWell after 8 years with my first DSLR the beloved Sony A200 with the 100mm Cosina 1:2 macro lens, I finally plumped for a Sony A65 coupled with a Tamron 90mm 1:1 macro lens.It will take me months to work out the ideal f-stop and iso settings for all of the light conditions during photography that are thrown at me, but I am pleasantly surprised so far. Here are a few pics from last nights catch, of which I must write up when I get time (list now added)Still a trickle of new for years but the amount of Macro moths has really dropped off with Micro moths more numerous in the trap, including 65 Blastobasis adustella! Roughdown Common - Hemel Hempstead - Field Trip - 17/07/14I was joined by David and Roger to Roughdown Common on a very favourable evening weatherwise. We had hit 33 degrees earlier on and as we arrived at Roughdown to start setting up, it was still a heady 25 degrees at 9pm!We did know of storms that were expected early morning, I thought we would be packed up and long gone before they turned up.As the evening went on it got very breezy indeed and this did hamper the catch somewhat...luckily we were just packing up the last trap at 2am when a flash of lightning caught our attention coming in on a Southerly from London. With traps all packed up it was a brisk walk back to the car...most of the gear was loaded and then the heavens opened. The moths were represented by most species but in relatively low numbers for the time of year.I was very very nice to see so many Dark Umbers, Brown Scallops and Maple Pugs.Highlight of the night was a new micro for us all, Metalampra italica a possible accidental introduction in 2003 is responsible for this and all previous records as it was only known in the past from Italy!Catch Report - 17/07/14 Roughdown Common - Hemel Hempstead - 2x 125w MV Robinson Trap, 1x 40w Lucent Suitcase Trap, 1x 160w MBT Robinson Trap & 1x 80w Actinic Suitcase Trap.96 Macros and 80 Micros (176 species)Macro Moths1x Beautiful Hook-tip2x Black Arches2x Bright-line Brown-eye4x Brimstone Moth1x Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing6x Brown Scallop2x Brown-line Bright-eye1x Brown-tail2x Buff Arches4x Buff Footman3x Clay3x Cloaked Minor5x Clouded Border1x Clouded Brindle8x Clouded Silver3x Common Carpet2x Common Emerald5x Common Rustic2x Common White Wave10x Coronet8x Dark Arches10x Dark Umber2x Dingy shears1x Dot Moth4x Double Square-spot 1x Drinker2x Dun-bar1x Dusky Brocade3x Early Thorn2x Elephant Hawk-moth1x Fan-foot 1x Fern1x Flame2x Flame Shoulder 2x Ghost Moth2x Green Pug1x Grey Dagger4x Haworth's Pug1x Heart & Club4x Heart & Dart 4x July Highflyer2x Large Yellow Underwing2x Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing1x Lesser Yellow Underwing1x Light Arches1x Light Emerald 1x Lime-speck Pug2x Maple Prominent10x Maple Pug2x Marbled Minor1x Miller3x Mottled Beauty2x Nut-tree Tussock1x Pale Mottled Willow1x Pale Prominent2x Peach Blossom1x Pebble Prominent3x Peppered Moth1x Phoenix1x Pine Hawk-moth 1x Poplar Grey1x Poplar Hawk-moth3x Pretty Chalk Carpet1x Purple Bar2x Red Twin-spot Carpet5x Riband Wave 4x Ruby Tiger1x Rustic2x Scalloped Oak1x Scarce Footman1x Scarce Silver-lines1x Scorched Carpet2x Shaded Broad-bar2x Shuttle-shaped Dart1x Single-dotted Wave1x Six-spot Burnet1x Slender Brindle1x Small Angle Shades2x Small Emerald2x Small Fan-foot10x Small Fan-footed Wave4x Small Rivulet2x Smoky Wainscot2x Snout2x Spectacle5x Swallow-tailed Moth1x Sycamore1x Tawny Marbled Minor1x Tawny Speckled Pug6x Tree-lichen Beauty3x Uncertain1x Vapourer Moth1x White-spotted Pug1x Willow Beauty1x Wormwood Pug1x Yellow ShellMicro Moths1x Metalampra italica [NEW!]6x Blastobasis laticolella2x Blastobasis adustella 5x Pleuroptya ruralis3x Agapeta hamana10+ Agapeta zoegana2x Coleophora sp2x Cydia splendana1x Agonopterix heracliana sp1x Hypatima rhomboidella2x Zeiraphera isertana1x Parornix sp2x Eudemis profundana1x Argyrotaenia ljungiana 1x Eurrhypara hortulata 20+ Chrysoteuchia culmella1x Agonopterix arenella 1x Pandemis cerasana 4x Pandemis heparana1x Pandemis corylana1x Homoeosoma sinuella2x Hofmannophila pseudospretella2x Phycita roborella 2x Celypha lacunana 1x Archips podana 1x Hedya nubiferana 7x Aleimma loeflingiana2x Epinotia demarniana 3x Eudonia mercurella 12x Cnephasia sp 2x Coleophora sp2x Ditula angustiorana 3x Dipleurina lacustrata10+ Eucosma cana3x Batia unitella 5x Acleris forsskaleana2x Argyresthia albistria20+ Eucosma hohenwartiana1x Eucosma obumbratana2x Aspilapteryx tringipennella2x Bucculatrix nigricomella 1x Rhopobota naevana1x Epiblema costipunctana1x Teleiodes vulgella 2x Carcina quercana 1x Pterophorus pentadactyla4x Catoptria falsella1x Oncocera semirubella 2x Pseudargyrotoza conwagana 5x Endotricha flammealis1x Stigmella sp3x Ancylis badiana4x Yponomeuta evonymella1x Phlyctaenia coronata2x Limnaecia phragmitella2x Syncopacma sp2x Plutella xylostella1x Gypsonoma dealbana 2x Spilonota ocellana1x Agriphila straminella2x Crambus perlella2x Dichomeris marginella 2x Eucosma campoliliana 10x Aethes rubigana1x Aethes cnicana2x Batia lunaris 2x Udea prunalis2x Clepsis consimilana1x Pammene fasciana1x Epinotia nisella2x Acentria ephemerella1x Recurvaria leucatella2x Catoptria pinella2 Epiblema uddmmaniana1 Cochylimorpha straminea 1x Eudonia pallida 2x Archips xylosteana 10+ Celypha striana 5x Scoparia ambigualis 2x Yponomeuta evonymella

Hexton Chalk Pit Field Trip report - 09/04/14Last night I was joined by Colin Plant and Roger Prue at Hexton Chalk Pit in probably the most North-westerly part of Hertfordshire as we could get, Bedfordshire was literally just over the road.We of course were in search of Northern Drab and trying to add another site for this rare moth (Having previously been caught the night before on chalk downland..I was hopeful)But to cut a long story short we didn't find it.Conditions were perfect, calm cloudy and mild for about an hour after dusk then it noticeably got a lot cooler and coats were zipped up and hats adorned! The sky still stayed thick with cloud. At about 11.30pm the sky cleared and it was time to start packing up.Not a huge amount of moths but a nice variety nevertheless with the bulk of the catch made up of Common Quaker's and Hebrew Character's. 10 examples of Red Chestnut were also nice to see, one that I haven't had in the garden yet.The micro's were where the interest was with 2 Agonopterix pallorella's turning up near the end of the session, an over-wintering Agonopterix and were actually last seen in the County at this very site...13 years ago in 2001.No doubt there may have been a few more records since? But I will have to enquire.Another little micro that was new for the year was Scrobipalpa acuminatella, which was narrowed down to the early flight season, it was so fresh and very shiny. All in all a lovely site, quite compact and easy to set-up traps once you have traversed the 45 degree climb into the pit!Catch Report - Hexton Chalk Pit - 09/04/14 - 2x 125w MV Robinson Trap, 1x 160w MBT Robinson Trap and 1x 80w Actinic TrapLights run from 8.00pm until 12.00amMacro Moths28x Common Quaker2x Double-striped Pug2x Water Carpet14x Hebrew Character2x Purple Thorn4x Nut-tree Tussock10x Red Chestnut1x Early Thorn1x Waved Umber5x Clouded Drab1x Small Quaker1x ChestnutMicro Moths1x Agonopterix pallorella [NEW!]1x Scrobipalpa acuminatella1x Agonopterix alstromeriana1x Mompha subbistrigella

Hemel Hempstead Field Trip - 12/07/13Last night David and myself paid a visit to Roughdown Common in search of some more species to add to the site list, and to hopefully find the Pale Shining Brown. In short we didn't get the target species, but it was nothingto be disheartened by, as we were actually running out of pots and energyto keep up with the amount of moths (particularly micros of which there were some good species)The night was warm, still and cloudy and the absolute perfect night for mothingand easily the warmest night so far with a steady 20c as were turning up at 9pm.We managed to go all out and setup 4 traps running off the genny.Of all of the 4 traps, both the MV's did very well, but the 80w Actinic impressed with the amount of micros that were found in and around it, the Skinner trapwas literally covered with them. The sky did eventually clear but the temperature when we packed up at 2am was still a great 15c.The amount of Coronets was a shock with at least 15 recorded between all 4 traps. Other good moths included Bordered Pug, Pretty Chalk Carpet, Blackneck, Dark Umber and BrownScallop. The micros were even more of a surprise, with some still to check.Numbers below are approximate.159 species total(91 Macro - 68 Micro) 12/07/13 - Roughdown Common - 2x 125w MV Robinson Trap, 1x 160w MBT Trap & 1x 80w Actinic Trap run from 9.45pm until 2.00amMacro Moths1x Barred Yellow3x Beautiful Golden-Y2x Beautiful Hook-tip1x Blackneck3x Blue-bordered Carpet4x Bordered Pug2x Bright-line Brown-eye5x Brimstone Moth2x Broad-barred White1x Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing2x Brown Rustic4x Brown Scallop1x Brown-line Bright-eye5x Buff Arches1x Buff Ermine1x Buff-tip1x Burnished Brass5x Clay2x Clouded Border2x Clouded Brindle20x Clouded Silver2x Clouded-bordered Brindle2x Common Carpet3x Common Emerald2x Common Footman2x Common Marbled Carpet1x Common Wainscot3x Common White Wave15x Coronet1x Currant Pug20x Dark Arches4x Dark Umber4x Dot Moth15x Double Square-spot2x Dusky Brocade6X Elephant Hawk-moth3x Fan-foot3x Fern1x Figure of Eighty8x Flame10x Flame Shoulder1x Garden Carpet8x Ghost Moth6x Green Pug1x Green Silver-lines3x Grey Dagger1x Haworth's Pug8x Heart & Club5x Heart & Dart2x Ingrailed Clay1x Iron Prominent4x July Highflyer2x Large Yellow Underwing2x Light Arches10x Light Emerald2x Lime-speck Pug1x Lobster Moth5x Maple Prominent10x Marbled Minor4x Miller12x Mottled Beauty1x Mottled Rustic1x Pale Mottled Willow3x Peach Blossom10x Peppered Moth2x Plain Golden-Y2x Poplar Grey3x Pretty Chalk Carpet10x Riband Wave4x Rustic2x Scarce Footman1x Shaded Broad-bar1x Shark2x Short-cloaked Moth3x Shoulder-striped Wainscot1x Single-dotted Wave2x Small Elephant Hawk-moth2x Small Emerald1x Small Fan-fooed Wave1x Small Rivulet1x Small Square-spot1x Small Yellow Wave5x Snout1x Spectacle5x Straw Dot8x Swallow-tailed Moth2x Tawny Marbled Minor5x Uncertain2x V-Pug2x Wormwood PugMicro Moths 1x Coleophora trifolii [NEW!]1x Caloptilia sp pos populetorum [NEW!]1x Monopis obviella [NEW!]1x Epinotia tedella [NEW!]1x Epinotia tenerana [NEW!]2x Eucosma conterminana [NEW!]1x Merrifieldia sp pos baliodactylus [NEW!]1x Teleoides vulgella [NEW!]2x Celypha striana2x Eupoecilia angustana20x Aleimma loeflingiana5x Archips podana2x Celypha lacunana1x Cochylis hybridella2x Crambus lathoniellus15x Pandemis cerasana2x Prays fraxinella2x Crambus perlella2x Eurrhypara hortulata2x Spilonota ocellana2x Aphomia sociella5x Lathronympha strigana2x Scoparia ambigualis3x Scoparia pyralella1x Agapeta hamana4x Agapeta zoegana2x Epiblema uddmanniana10x Eucosma cana3x Eucosma campoliliana10x Hedya pruniana2x Hedya nubiferana1x Agonopterix arenella1x Batia unitella2x Dipleurina lacustrata5x Metzneria metzneriella3x Pseudargyrotoza conwagana4x Ditula angustiorana10x Chrysoteuchia culmella40x Tortrix viridana3x Udea olivalis1x Udea prunalis1x Pterophorus pentadactyla5x Coleophora sp1x Emmelina monodactyla1x Aethes cnicana2x Cochylimorpha straminea1x Blastobasis laticolella1x Argyresthia goedartella1x Pseudoswammerdamia combinella1x Pleuroptya ruralis2x Endotricha flammealis2x Argyresthia spinosella1x Epiblema foenella2x Ephestia parasitella10x Epinotia brunnichana2x Epinotia abbreviana2x Epiblema trimaculana2x Aphelia paleana4x Ancylis achatana2x Yponomeuta evonymella5x Archips xylosteana3x Phycita roborella1x Catoptria falsella4x Cydia splendana1x Eudonia pallida1x Blastodacna hellerella1x Anthophila fabriciana2x Scythropia crataegella

A trip down to Dungeness in Kent on Saturday night proved to be the coolest conditions we have experienced for a while, with clear skies, bright moon and misty air coming from the sea. As you can imagine it wasn't great and the moths were few and far between, but I did manage a few new ones for me. Yellow Belle, Pale Grass Eggar, Antler Moth, Celypha cespitana, Aroga velocella and Cynaeda dentalis were all new for me. There are still some Bactra's to confirm and a few unidentified micros to sort out.All in all despite the catastrophic weather I was pleased to pick up some new ones.

Catch Report - 05/06/12 - Back Garden/FarmlandInto June we go and another good haul of moths including a few new ones for the year. Coleophora deauratella being a new micro for my records.Other highlights including a lovely fresh Sandy carpet, an uncommon visitor, Ypsolopha nemorella and the mprobably migrant Pyralid Sitochroa verticalis. The weather is very changeable at the moment and a strong south-facing wind is dominating us now. Coupled with mild temperatures, we could see some more migrants reaching our traps in the next few nights.
