They are native to Middle America, The Contiguous United States, Maranhao, Florida, Rio De Janeiro, ParaíBa, Paraná, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio Grande Do Norte, Ceará, Bahia, Mata Atlântica, Amazônia, SãO Paulo, Puerto Rico, Atlantic And Gulf Coastal Plain (Agcp), Pará, Alagoas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Espirito Santo, and Sergipe. They have simple, broad leaves. Flowers are visited by Phocides pigmalion, Florida Carpenter Ant, Ministrymon ligia, and Many-banded Daggerwing. Button Mangrove form mangrove swamps. Individuals can grow to 20 m.
