They are native to Poland, Spain, Greece, Sweden, Belarus, Hungary, Germany, Czech Republic, Finland, Italy, Russia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Algeria, Iran, Latvia, Yugoslavia, Austria, Eastern North America, Estonia, Ireland, The Netherlands, Bulgaria, Turkey, Norway, France, Morocco, Belgium, Moldova, Albania, Kazakhstan, Switzerland, Romania, Denmark, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Lithuania, and Ukraine. They have simple, broad leaves and drupe. Individuals can grow to 3.6 m.
