conferta: crowded together, perhaps referring to the leaves.

Glabrous, aquatic, slightly fleshy, annual herb. Stems 6-12 cm, ± leafless below. Upper leaves opposite, obovate, clustered at the ends of the stems and floating on the water surface. Flowers axillary, borne on pedicels 4-10 mm long. Calyx 2-2.5 mm, divided almost to the base. Corolla white with purplish, mauve or magenta markings; upper lip 4-5 mm entire, lower lip c. 8 mm long, 3-lobed.
