Gymnophryid protist, amoeboid body form, small, usually under 10 µm, giving rise to a small number of branching thin pseudopodia that bear extrusomes. Short flagella evident by electron microscopy. The boundaries of this genus and Penardia appear confused. From soils and freshwater, probably monotypic. Type species: Gymnophrys cometa Cienkowski, 1876
