The copepod Eurytemora americana used to be found solely at the east coasts of America. The species reached Europe through transport in ballast water of ships (first observations in England around 1933). The first Belgian observation of the species dates from 1938, in the Sluice Dock of Ostend. The species can compete with indigenous copepods.
