Lifespan, longevity, and ageing

Maximum longevity: 17 years (captivity)
Observations: In captivity, these animals live about 5 years compared to little over 1 year in the wild. The maximum longevity reported in the wild is 9.8 years (http://www.fs.fed.us/database/feis/). There is also anecdotal evidence suggesting one animal was alive at age 17 (John Terres 1980).
