The genus Podosphaeraster Clark & Wright was originally placed into the Sphaerasteridae, which had previously only included Jurassic fossil forms. Subsequent study of the morphology of both organisms has led to the formation of a new family for Podosphaeraster (see Fujita & Rowe, 2002) leaving only fossil forms in the Sphaerasteridae.
