Colonies are arborescent, usually staghorn-like. Radial corallites are of mixed sizes and shapes. Those near branch tips are long and tubular and outwardly projecting. Colour: usually dark reddish-brown with very pale branch ends. Other colours include blue, purple and green, usually with paler branch ends. Abundance: Seldom common but found in a wide variety of environments. Most common on upper reef slopes where individual colonies may be up to 7 m across (Veron, 1986).
