On a bank in forest north of Casadero along the road to the Cedars but not in the serpentine area (Sonoma County, California, US). This is a fairly dissected form of P. californicum but is not dissected enough to be P. dudleyi and has narrower fronds than that species. Image I12-0437, Feb. 4th 2012.

Elaphoglossum peltatumpeltate tonguefern. A fine looking fern that is native to several countries in the New World tropics. It is found in Puerto Rico and so makes it into the USDA PLANTS database. Photographed at University of California Botanical Garden, Berkeley, CA.

The main plant with the upright central fronds is Polystichum dudleyi. Above this across the top of the image are fronds of Polystichum munitum, and at the lower right (and also near the top just below the P. munitum) are fronds of Polystichum californicum. These fronds are less divided than those of P. dudleyi, reflecting that P. californicum is a hybrid species formed from P. dudleyi and P. munitum. In forest west of Lake Lagunitas, north side of Mount Tamalpais, Marin County, California. Image I09-5418, Dec 20th 2009.

This rare fern is seen here in its native habitat in cloud forest on the island of Rarotonga (Cook Islands, South Pacific). It was first described from Rarotonga by T.F. Cheeseman, who discovered it there in 1899. He gave it the specific epithet "leucorhachis" but placed it in a different genus. A French Polynesian species, Acrophorus raiateensis, was described subsequently (in 1933) but is probably identical to A. leucorhachis. The name "leucorhachis" has priority and Rarotonga is the "type locality" for this fern. March 1992, east side of Te Manga/Ikurangi ridge, scanned Kodachrome slide 007-097.
