Conservation Status

provided by EOL authors

Most species in the genus Tragulus, one of three genera in the family Tragulidae, are very poorly known, making conservation status difficult to assess. The Lesser Indo-Malayan Chevrotain (T. kanchil) and the Greater Indo-Malayan Chevrotain (T. napu) are widespread and at least locally common. The Balabac Chevrotain (T. nigricans) is found only on several islands in the Philippines and is considered endangered. Threats to Tragulus species include habitat loss, hunting, and capture for the live animal trade.
