Description: Infestation of hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae) near Painter Run, Sullivan County, within State Game Land 13. The hemlock woolly adelgid is an exotic insect pest that has wreaked havoc on forest and stream ecosystems across eastern North America. Small, white, cottony sacs at the base of the needles indicate the insects’ presence. At State Game Land 13, the infestation is extensive and severe in the low-elevation stream valleys. Description: Hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae), Pike County, within the Stairway Wild Area of Delaware State Forest. The hemlock woolly adelgid is an exotic insect pest that has wreaked havoc on the forest ecosystems of eastern North America. Finding the pest here, in this remote corner of Pike County, was disturbing but not surprising; wind, wildlife, and humans easily spread the pest to new locations. Nearby locations, including the Lacawac Sanctuary and the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, have been infested for years. The forest overall still seems healthy. Second-growth hemlocks are abundant, along with a few old-growth specimens that escaped both the logging and the mining that once overtook the region. Date: 29 July 2012, 17:49. The hemlock woolly adelgid is an exotic insect pest that has wreaked havoc on forest and stream ecosystems across eastern North America. Small, white, cottony sacs at the base of the needles indicate the insects’ presence. In the natural area, I found several lightly infested trees near Gamble Run Road. Description: Hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae), Huntingdon County, within the Detweiler Run Natural Area of Rothrock State Forest. The hemlock woolly adelgid is an exotic insect pest that has wreaked havoc on forest and stream ecosystems across eastern North America. Small, white, cottony sacs at the base of the needles indicate the insects’ presence. Most of Rothrock State Forest is infested, even at the highest elevations. The infestation is especially severe along the northern stretch of Bear Meadows Road; many trees there are dead or dying. In the Detweiler Run Natural Area, the trees along Detweiler Road and the pipeline swath are the most damaged.
