Purshia tridentata. A beautiful locally native shrub to small tree, very fragrant in flower, interesting and long lasting foiliage, important browse plant, which has been largely ignored for residential and other landscaping purposes. A nice stand of it still exists here, but its historic habitat in the Salt Lake Valley has been significantly impacted.Welsh (2008 and prior) and Van Buren (2011) describe this mainly shrub as being no more than 2 meters tall; however Lois Arnow (1980, Flora of the Central Wasatch Front) indicates 1-2 (4) meters and I have seen plants in this area that were at least 3 meters tall. Intermountain Flora Vol. 3A (1997) is silent as to its height/size.May 17, 2008, Olympus Hills Park, Salt Lake County, Utah, elev. approx. 4855 ft. elev.

Purshia stansburyana (Torr.) Henr. (the spelling is now stansburyana rather than "stansburiana"). The style elongates and in fruit becomes plumose. The 4-7 achenes are narrowly turbinate (coil-shaped) and become wedged into the narrow hypanthium. The leaves are 5-7 lobed. Purshia mexicana, on the other hand, which occurs only in Mexico, has smaller, 3-lobed leaves, hypanthium is broadly hemispherical, has more achenes (7-15), and its sepals and hypanthium have few to no stipitate glands (see Vol. 3A, Intermountain Flora).September 2, 2011, Hovenweep National Monument, San Juan County, Utah, elevation approx. 5200 ft.
