Another scientific name of this species is Potentilla fruticosa. While the floral structure of Shrubby Cinquefoil resembles that of the various Potentilla spp. (Cinquefoils), the latter are non-woody plants with smaller flowers (¼–¾" across). Another species, Sibbaldiopsis tridentata (Three-Toothed Cinquefoil), is a low woody plant with small white flowers; it more closely resembles a Fragaria sp. (Wild Strawberry) than Shrubby Cinquefoil.
