Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee NWR, Boyton Beach FlThis stood out like a beacon. According to the one I found on BugGuide, its color changes from a lime green to this brilliant color when starting to morph into the chrysalis life stage. Its host is the red bay tree.

This is a Black Swallowtail caterpillar feeding on a parsley plant at the Grapevine Botanical Gardens. This caterpillar has an orange scent gland, or osmeterium. It will extend this gland if it is aggravated or senses danger. The gland gives off a rather unpleasant musky citrus oder intended to ward off danger. The blurred plants in the background are coleus.I wish the entire caterpillar was in better focus but I decided to post it anyway because you don't often see the osmeterium extended.

Swallow Tail (Papilio machaon), Schwalbenschwanz, Langnau im Emmental, Emmental, Switzerlandf6.4 Tamron Macro 90 mm f2.8Best start in the new week, tricky conditions, quite cold and windy, I just took a little walk around, detecting something "odd", not belonging to that place in the grass on the hill. It was a Swallowtail! Probably even "our" swallowtail which hatched 4 days ago with its missing tail.I did a little bit of experimenting with Depth-of-Field. You certainly know the problem with sharper shots but noisier background. So it is always some kind of compromise on which criteria you put your personal focus. Please, take a look at the serial! It would be very nice and interesting if you make some comments which one is for you the best one... and it is just this shot to comment. The other ones were closed at the moment. There is no cropped shot! Many thanks to all friends who made some comments about their favorites! Allover favs are #1 and #4, also my choice ;-)...!!Obviously this shot was on Explore #68...!

The male dainty swallowtail was one of several at the top of Mt Marlay hilltopping (i.e. doing circuits looking for mates). I had to wait for some time before it took a break!
