Genicanthus takeuchii, like the other angelfishes in the genus Genicanthus, shows sexual dichromatism, the males and females show differences in colour and pattern. The male is greyish white on the upper body with six to eight horizontal stripes, while the lower body is pale white. The dorsal fin and the caudal fin are both marked with large black spots. Females have an overall colour of greyish white with a dense pattern of black spots on the upper body and caudal fin.[2] The juveniles have a honeycomb pattern on the upper body.[3] The dorsal fin contains 15 spines and 16 soft rays while the anal fin has 3 spines and 17-18 soft rays. This species attains a maximum total length of 25 centimetres (9.8 in).[4]
Genicanthus takeuchii is found in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. It is restricted to Marcus Island and the Ogasawara Islands to the southeast of Japan.[4] They have also been found in the Marianas Islands.[3]
Genicanthus takeuchii is a little known species of deep coral reefs at depths between 25 and 60 metres (82 and 197 ft).[1]
Genicanthus takeuchii was first formally described in 1997 as Holocanthus semifasciatus by the American ichthyologist Richard L. Pyle with the type locality given as Ani-jima, Mansakunohama in the Ogasawara Islands of Japan.[5] The specific name honours the discoverer of this species, the Japanese diver Hiroshi Takeuchi.[6] This species is known to hybridise with the Japanese swallow (Genicanthus semifasciatus).[3]

Genicanthus takeuchii is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van engel- of keizersvissen (Pomacanthidae).[2] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1997 door Pyle.
De soort staat op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN als niet bedreigd, beoordelingsjaar 2009. De omvang van de populatie is volgens de IUCN stabiel.[1]

G. takeuchii trưởng thành dài đến 25 cm. Đây là loài dị hình giới tính. Cá đực có thân màu xám trắng với các sọc ngang màu đen nằm ở 2/3 thân trên, phần bụng nhạt màu hơn. Cuống đuôi, vây đuôi và phần sau vây lưng có các đốm tròn màu đen khá lớn. Thùy đuôi hình cánh nhạn và khá dài. Cá mái có màu sắc tương tự cá đực, nhưng thân trên thay vì là những sọc dài thì lại là những đốm đen nhỏ chi chít, trải dài tới cuống đuôi. Thùy đuôi của cá mái cũng dài như cá đực[3].

Thức ăn chủ yếu của G. takeuchii là những loài sinh vật phù du, động vật giáp xác và rong tảo[1][2]. G. takeuchii thường sống thành đàn nhỏ, gồm một con đực với nhiều cá mái. Chúng thường bơi ở tầng giữa của đại dương[1][2].
G. takeuchii không có mặt trong các bể cá cảnh vì chúng bị cấm đánh bắt tại Nhật[4].
