Sika Deer (Cervus nippon yakushimae) in Assateague State Park, MD before sunset on April 25, 1989. Sometimes called elk, these small relatives of deer were native to southern Japan before being introduced to the Eastern Shore in 1916. They arrived on the island in 1923.
