Black Ant, Lasius niger agg.

Image of Black garden ant

Description:

Workers on queen pupa. The resolution is just good enough to make out the erect hairs on the scape of the antenna (top left ant best) which distinguishes this species from L.alienus.A mound-nest of these has suddenly appeared in the long-grass area. Up until now there have just been Yellow Ant nests there, with the odd Black Ant found on paths & under stones.
