Description: English: Guinea pigs are a favorite food in Peru and were in the middle of the room fattening up for when they will be eaten. Ollantaytambo , the Inca fortress, which guarded the entry of this part of the Sacred Valley and protected it from invasion. The fortress consists of a series of superimposed terraces of carved stones accessed by long staircases. It was a strategic military, religious and agricultural center. It was here that Manco Inca’s warriors successfully defeated Pizarro in 1536 and subsequently enclosed the site and the valley with a defensive wall. Ollantaytambo is a quechua word “Ollanta” that was the name of an Inca General and “Tambo” means a city that offered and hosted, food and comfort for travelers, Ollantaytambo means “Tambo de Ollanta ”.
