Described as a distinct sub-species in 1884 it shows a tendancy of many Hebridean birds to be darker than their mainland cousins. Almost rendered extinct due to egg collecting and specimen hunting, a protection order was placed on the wren by an Act of Parliament in 1904. Their continuity was thus ensured. Date: 17 June 1988.
