Ampelomyia viticola, Newport, N.H

Image of Grape Tube Gallmaker

Description:

Description: English: Information by the photographer: „Ampelomyia viticola, Newport, N.H., June 2020. Even though the information states that it is not harmful, I smelled a weird odor and that is how I found it. To me, it looked like it might be something similar to Poison Sumac.“ According to the photographer, these leaves bear galls by Ampelomyia viticola (synonym: Schizomyia viticola). So, the plant would have to be a grapevine species (Vitis spec.). On the other hand, the leaves bear strong resemblance to those of lime trees (Tilia spec.), and those can display similar galls, e.g. by Eriophyes tiliae. The latter is a European species but has also been reported from the U.S. Date: 18 June 2020, 15:00:00. Source: Own work. Author: Amcamfield2.
