Description:

Camera location39° 21′ 52.2″ N, 123° 37′ 37.2″ W View all coordinates using: OpenStreetMap 39.364500; -123.627000. Description: Phaeolus schweinitzii group Image location: Jackson Demonstration State Forest, Mendocino Co., California, USA Fused caps ~ 7 cm across. Whitish lobes bruising brown. Stem color turning dark navy rather quickly. Could not get a spore print nor able to extract spores. There was an odor but I couldn’t name it. Could be a very young Hydnellum suaveolens. Edit 12-4-2016; I’m yielding to “expert” opinion that these are likely an odd form of Phaeolus schweinitzii (or something closely related).
