Description:
Family: MimosaceaeDistribution: Indian subcontinent and Persia. Common in scrub forests in dry stony soil. 10 m tall, armed trees, bark grey rough; branches with scattered spines. Leaves bipinnate, pinnae 2-3 pairs, 3-5cm long, leaflets 8-12 pairs, sessile. Flowers yellow in 6-10cm long slender branched racemose spikes. Calyx 5, adnate to ovary, corolla 5, gamopetalous, stamens 10, ovary one celled, many ovules.It is known as Jammi chettu or Shami vriksham . It is a sacred tree for Hindus. Leaf poultice, bark are used as medicines. Photographed at Eastern ghats.
