Coccolithophorids, vegetative cells non-motile, young cells forming cubic masses, older cells with a thick stratified mucilage sheath, the latter often forming colourless unbranched stalks with one or more cells situated distally; calcified bodies formed extracellularly; cells with one chloroplast with immersed pyrenoids, chrysolaminarin and other vesicles present together with a carotenoid body. Asexual reproduction by vegetative cell division and production of motile zoospores; zoospores with two subequal, sub-apically inserted flagella, homo- or heterodynamic; haptonema rudimentary with few (about two or three) microtubules and reduced endoplasmic reticulum, chloroplast single with immersed pyrenoid close to inner face; eyespot absent.
