Umbellularia californicaCalifornia Bay Tree. "The most valued and best publicized hardwood species in the Western United States", according to the U. S. Forest Service "Silvics of North America" website. The leaves of the California Bay are useful in cooking although much more potent the leaves of the European laurel (Laurus nobilis) that are more commonly used.
