Perennial herbs, 70-120 cm tall. Stems branched in upper part, with arachnoid villous, branched ascending. Lower cauline leaves elliptic, 50-60 cm long, 18-24 cm wide, two times pinnately, the first pinnately deeply lobed, lobs 10-11 pairs, the second pinnately shallowly lobed, lobs triangular or triangular-lanceolate, 1-2 pairs; adaxial faces green or light green, with sparsely or densely spines, spines 0.3-1 mm long; abaxial faces grey-white, with densely villous. Heads hanging, often crowded in tight clusters at stem tips, collectively forming paniculiform arrays. Phyllaries in 7 series, outer and mid triangular, lanceolate to oblong, 2.2-2.5 cm long, inner linear, 3.8 cm long. Flowers reddish-purple, corollas 2.9 cm long, tubes 1.9 cm long, throats 1 cm long, shallowly 5-lobed. Cypselae brown, oblong-elliptic, 5 mm long, 2 mm wide; pappi 2 cm long.
