Body shape ovoid, posterior always rounded, anterior sometimes slightly narrowed. Oral aperture apically located, supported by cytopharyngeal basket of trichites. Body covered in uniform ciliation, either in longitudinal or oblique rows. There are many extensible tentacles among the cilia which may be retracted or extended to about twice the body width. Macronucleus usually elongate and ribbon-like. Single terminal contractile vacuole. Carnivorous, feeds on rotifers, algae and ciliates.
