A shrub or small tree, the twigs densely pubescent to glabrate ; leaves pinnate, shortpetioled; leaflets 5-25, usually 9-17, oblong to ovate or somewhat obovate, sessile, obtuse at the apex, narrowed at the base, serrate, 8-20 mm. long, glabrous above, pubescent on the veins beneath or sometimes glabrous on both sides ; rachis-wings broad and halfrhombic, or narrow ; racemes usually longer than the leaves, 8 cm. long or less, densely many-flowered ; pedicels clustered, filiform, 2-4 times as long as the calyx, appressedpubescent ; sepals ovate to ovate-lanceolate, acute, pubescent or glabrate, about 1 mm. long ; petals obovate to oblong-obovate, 1-nerved, longer than the calyx ; stamens about ' VOI.UMK ;22, Part 2, 1905] 179 three times as long as the calyx ; capsule ovoid, glabrous, longer than the subulate styles. Plant very variable in pubescence and in size of leaves and leaflets.
Type locality: Jamaica.
Distribution : Jamaica ; Cuba, Haiti, Porto Rico, St. Kitts to St. Vincent ; Hidalgo and Jalapa to Costa Rica ; Colombia to Brazil. » & j f
