Although algae and scavenged animal matter make up a large part of this species' diet, it is one of the few hermits that strains particles from the plankton.

Photographed at 20 m. depth. The species is well camouflaged and often difficult to detect. Its carapace completely covers the legs.

Found on the gorgonian Lophogorgia chilensis brought up from 58 m. The hermits have found home in the shells of Nassarius mendicus cooperi

Female Emerita about 30 mm long. The underside of this female shows orange eggs that she is brooding between her thorax and her folded abdomen; her abdominal swimmerets hold the eggs in place.
