Anas fulvigula Family Anatidae The Mottled Duck, a close relative of the Mallard, has a more restricted geographical range: it is found on the Florida peninsula, along the Atlantic coast of Georgia and South Carolina, and along the Gulf of Mexico coast from Alabama west through Louisiana, Texas, and south to Tampico, Mexico. Unlike Mallards, the males and females have similar coloration. They sometimes hybridize with domesticated Mallards which have been released, which causes some confusion in identification. Description: Mottled Duck (Anas fulvigula). Something about this duck told me it might not be a Mallard, so I took some pains to try to get a decent shot, despite the lighting. Viewing the photo I questioned whether it might be Mottled Duck, a life bird for us west-coasters. Sent photo to some of my Birds-Pix friends, who in turn sent it to some experts, and the work came back "Mottled Duck, for sure".
