Marine picoplanktonic, unicellular (rarely colonial), surrounded by a wall, and lack flagella; a channel in the pyrenoid contains a protrusion from the mitochondrion, a very unusual character shared with the flagellated prasinophyte Pseudoscourfieldia; studies on the Rubisco-gene have confirmed phylogenetic relationship between these coccoid species and Pseudoscourfieldia.

Descrição

Entre as características definidoras desta família inclui-se a presença de uma única invaginação do pirenoide na região de contacto com a membrana da mitocôndria[2] e a existência de um aestrutura designada por "decaporo", um anel de 10 poros atravessando a espessa parede celular.[3]
