When handled, they play dead for quite a while, making it easy to get photos. The scales are quite something on this beetle--they look almost like mites.PCCA20080423-0739A

A large dung beetle,
Dichotomius carolinus, that just hit my back window a few minutes ago. I've found them dead a few times, but this is my first live one. They are very impressive--said to be so strong it is difficult for a human to hold them in a closed fist. Length is about 28 mm--the largest dung beetle in North America, they tell me on BugGuide. (There are some larger North American beetles, just not any larger dung beetles.)
