Boloria napaea is resident to Alaska and across northwestern Canada, and to the Wind River mountains of Wyoming as a small, separate population; subspecies range from the Pyrenees to Siberia (Scott 1986). Habitats are Arctic/Alpine zone moist tundra (Alpine meadows in Wyo). Host plants are largely restricted to herbaceous species in genus Polygonum (Polygonaceae); in Europe also species of Viola (Violaceae) and Vaccinium (Ericaceae). Eggs are laid haphazardly near the host plant. Individuals are biennial, overwinter as first instar larvae the first winter, as older larvae the second winter. There is one flight each year with the approximate flight time late June-July31 in the Arctic, late July-Aug 15 in Wyo. (Scott 1986). Some authorities classify as Boloria alaskensis.
