Darter, or Shag (Male)
Description :
Distinctive Australian fishing bird.Better viewed largeThe plumage is sparse and easily becomes wet, so they must dry their wings conspicuously.Other names: Diver, Needle-beak Shag, Snake-birdAustralians often call this water bird "Shag", but Australians call Cormorant "Shag" as well... The Darter belongs to Anhinga genus.Anhingas and cormorants are extremely similar, but unlike the cormorants, anhingas most often seen inland, around permanent and temporary water bodies, but may be seen in calm seas near shore, fishing. Darters are swimming with only the snake-like neck visible above the water, so sometimes called snake-bird.Species Anhinga novaehollandiae or Anhinga melanogaster, not sure... they are sometimes considered to be a subspecies.
