Stems are hairy to hairless. Spiny stipules are 1-3 mm long. Leaves are lobed (with a sharp point at the tips of each lobe) and 2-10 cm long x 1-3 cm wide; upper surface is reticulate and shining. Flowers are 8-10 mm long and pea-shaped. Petals 5 are yellow to orange-yellow, often with red markings. Flowers in spring and early summer.
