Description: English: Florida Scrub Jay - Aphelocoma coerulescens, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Titusville, Florida. I've been trying to see one of these beautiful birds for years. I was told you had to call for them, "a sort of squawk with spit". So I tried. Imagine my surprise when a stunning blue and gray bird flew out of the pine tree, straight at my eyes. I closed my eyes, anticipating an Alfred Hitchcock "The Birds" scenario, and it landed on my head. It scratched around my head for about a minute, then flew off to the post where this picture was taken. The other people in the parking lot were just killing themselves laughing.
