Description :

Description: Nolina interrata—Dehesa Nolina. Included in the CNPS Inventory of Rare and Endangered Plants on list 1B.1 (rare, threatened, or endangered in CA and elsewhere). It is also listed by the State of California as Endangered. In addition to the ten or so USA populations known to exist there are three populations in Northwestern Baja California. Dehesa means "pasture" in Spanish but, more pertinently, is the name of a school in Southern San Diego County where the type locality of this Nolina is found. The species name "interrata" refers the fact that the stem is buried or nearly so. This Nolina is never "treelike" in the manner of other Nolinas. Shown are a small flower about 4 mm in width along with what Jepson e-Flora calls "persistent" bracts. The plant that provided the inflorescence photographed is at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA. Date: 13 August 2017, 10:28.
