Probable origin Malesia floristic zone and widely cultivated in paleotropics. Evergreen perennial creeper found in most part of tropical Asia. The leaf is valued as a stimulant and in traditional medicines and paired with betel nut is almost a must for Malay shamanic rituals in folk medicines.
