Leaves are spiny and form a rosette when young. Rigid, ribbed stems are covered with minute hairs. Flowerheads are solitary terminal heads; heads have tubular yellow florets surrounded by stiff, spiny, leaf-like hairy bracts. Germinates mostly in autumn; plant is in rosette form over winter; flower stem elongates in spring; flowers in early summer. A native of Europe, it is occurs on bare or disturbed soils. An important weed of cultivated or cropping country. It is a contaminant of grain and hay. Smaller rosettes may be grazed by stock but are avoided once they become larger; heavy grazing encourages growth. Seed rarely germinates if buried below 5 cm; ploughing to bury seed can be useful.
