Male flowers of Jatropha curcas, one of the potential biodiesel crops. In practice, oil yields are low and one or two serious breakthroughs are urgently needed. In contrast with many other Jatropha species, male flowers open first and female flowers come later, flowering together with the male flowers. This stimulates selfing. Note the pilose interior of the petals.

Not everything is rosy, though, because per-hectare oil yields are still low and considerable research needs to be done. Since most Jatropha experimental plantations are situated in poor tropical countries, food security issues must be taken into account.

Also known as Physic Nut and Coquillo, the seeds are oily and a potential source of biodiesel. They are also both poisonous and medicinal. Of mesoamerican origin, this scrambling shrub is now widely distributed, here in the Darien of Panama.

The ripe fruits of Jatropha curcas turn yellow and later, when they dry, turn a darkbrown color. In the dry state they can stay on the tree for several months.
