Description: English: Original description on Flickr: A very cool mite! Parasitengona, prob. Erythaeidae sp. Edit. The photo was sent to Owen Seeman, a Tasmanian mite expert and apart from supplying the rough ID, he also pointed out that the other, tiny mite is actually a mite larva, quite possibly, and funnily enough, the larval form of the same species. This is because the larvae of this group, including Trombiculidae, or 'chigger' mites prey on insects and arachnids. So now you know. Unbelievably, this is a mite, just over 1.5mm big, and I've never seen anything like it before! This was found out on a millipede and springtail hunt the other day near Table mountain in Tasmania with a lovely bloke called Bob Mesibov, Tasmania's millipede expert. He found it, actually. And my god, he knows his leaf litter species. Fabulous. A fauna and flora encyclopedia on legs. He found a new millipede species that day too. This is a 15 photo stack, and really worth looking at in Large, ( click on Download/All sizes) to see the detail and shoddy stacking, as it was moving its legs.. There's a smaller mite attached below the eye, which is kind of cool. (..). Date: 30 March 2014, 08:09:11. Source: A very cool mite! Parasitengona, prob. Erythaeidae sp. (13506866565).
