Sivun Toxorhynchites kuva

Kuvaus:

Description: English: >>This illustration depicts a Toxorhynchites sp., “Elephant mosquito” from a lateral view, and an inset of its head region revealing the morphologic details of its mouthparts. The “Elephant mosquito”, Toxorhynchites sp., uses its curved proboscis to facilitate its acces to a flower’s nectar stores. It is a very large mosquito with a wingspan of approximately 12mm, and a body length of about 7mm. As an aquatic larva this mosquito is carnivorous, preying on other mosquito larvae that exist in the same breeding pools, and is therefore bred to help control populations of arbovirus vector mosquitoes.
