Photo by Jamie McMillan One of several similar O.fusca-type orchids, and a recent split from O.cressa. Note yellow at the top and lower edges of the lip. Other fuscas found on Crete are Ophrys iricolor, which is purplish at the top and underneath the lip, and Ophrys cressa with a less downcurved lip than creberrima. Very pleased with this photo as I hadn't considered it a split when I took it, but by luck it shows the downcurved lip well. More recently it has been suggested that all these are still best lumped under O. fusca: Ophrys creberrima Paulus, J. Eur. Orch. 30: 168 (1998). Ophrys fusca subsp. creberrima (Paulus) H.Kretzschmar, Orchid. Kreta: 174 (2002). The Kew official list has this as O.fusca subsp. fusca.

I am not sure why this photo has appeared as a synonym for Ophrys lupercalis, except that both are sometimes treated as subspecies or forms of O.fusca. Ophrys lupercalis Devillers-Tersch. & Devillers, Naturalistes Belges 75(7 Suppl.): 373 (1994). Ophrys fusca subsp. lupercalis (Devillers-Tersch. & Devillers) Kreutz, Orchidee (Hamburg) 57: 101 (2006). Ophrys creberrima Paulus, J. Eur. Orch. 30: 168 (1998). Ophrys fusca subsp. creberrima (Paulus) H.Kretzschmar, Orchid. Kreta: 174 (2002). The Kew list has them both as O.fusca subsp. fusca., so perhaps neither has been split.
