CITES Species Appendix I - Animals

Roughly 5,000 species of animals and 29,000 species of plants are protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) against over-exploitation through international trade. They are listed in the three CITES Appendices.

Here we list the animal species and subspecies listed in Appendix I (2011 Edition). Appendix I lists species that are the most endangered among CITES-listed animals. They are threatened with extinction and CITES prohibits international trade in specimens of these species except when the purpose of the import is not commercial, for instance for scientific research.
