Northern Hardwood Forest Plant Community
Characteristic plants of the Southern Appalachian Northern Hardwood Forest community.
Distinguishing characteristics: Dominated by mesophytic canopy trees, such as American beech, yellow birch, yellow buckeye, and sugar maple; similar to rich cove forest in species composition
Occurrence: Limited to higher elevations (over 4,000 ft) in the Southern Appalachians of western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, southwestern Virginia, and northeastern Georgia
Conservation aspects: Usually occurs on land managed by the US Forest Service or National Park Service. Threatened by invasive species, disease, and air pollution.
